Language is like a living being. It changes just as we change. In Slovenia we can see huge influences from German, Italian, Hungarian and Croatian languages. These influences can be easily seen in dialects. We have about 47 dialects and seven dialect groups.
A dialect is also influenced by the type of terrain people live on. If the terrain is hardly crossable, the dialect there will probably be much different from the language elsewhere.

It is true that languages change for different reasons. They are changing as I am writing this.
Most languages are alive and everything that is alive must adapt to its environment. It is influenced by everything around it. My mother tongue has many words that have Croatian and German origin. That is because Slovenia was a part of Yugoslavia where Croatia was, too. The German words are here because of the German industrial supremacy and political pressure.
Today there are less German and many more English words in use in my mother tongue.
